When Martha Muulyau was four years old, she was diagnosed with polio. As her back is badly curved due to scoliosis, she has often had to be operated on. Despite these operations, Martha is handicapped. She also wears a pacemaker. It isn't that surprising that she was happy when she found a job at Ehafo, a project that helps handicapped people in Windhoek.

At Ehafo's, Martha met Christien Roos. Christien came to Namibia to work for Ehafo after she finished her studies in the Netherlands. In 1992 Martha and Christien co-founded Penduka. They founded this organisation to help disadvantaged women to improve the standards of living for themselves, but also for their (extended) family and their immediate environment.

Penduka achieves this by staying close to the women and by allowing these women to earn a living by doing what they do best: making beautiful products. Penduka encourages these women to use their skills to provide for themselves.

Martha comes from Omishe in Owambaland. She is one of Penduka's co-founders. When she was diagnosed with polio at the age of four, she went to live with her aunt. Her mother already had three children of whom she had to take care.

Martha now lives at Penduka. She is a teacher and she helps making products for Penduka. Martha wants to build her own house in Katutura, Windhoek's township. When she is older, she would like to go back to Owambaland. She would like to help the elderly that never managed to leave. Lots of young people move to Windhoek to find work. Their parents and grandparents need to find a way to provide for themselves. Martha supports her family with the money she earns. She pays the food and the tuition fees for her cousins, nephews and nieces.

Toen ze vier jaar was, kreeg Martha Muulyau polio. Omdat haar rug door scoliose is scheefgegroeid, is ze vaak geopereerd. Desondanks is Martha gehandi- capt. Ook heeft ze een pacemaker. Geen wonder dat ze blij was toen ze werk vond bij Ehafo, een project voor gehandicapte mensen in Windhoek. Voor vrouwen in Namibië is het erg moeilijk om een baan te vinden. Laat staan voor gehandicapte vrouwen. Zelf zegt Martha dat haar leven pas echt begon toen ze werk vond.

Bij Ehafo maakte Martha kennis met Christien Roos. Christien kwam na haar studie in Nederland naar Namibië om te werken bij Ehafo. Samen richtten ze in 1992 Penduka op. Om kansarme vrouwen in Namibië te helpen een hogere levensstandaard te bereiken. Voor zichzelf, maar ook voor hun gezin, familie en naaste omgeving.

Dat doet Penduka door dicht bij de vrouwen te blijven. Door de vrouwen van Penduka geld te laten verdienen met wat ze het beste kunnen: mooie spullen maken. Door de vrouwen van Penduka bewust te maken van hun vaardigheden. Door de vrouwen van Penduka te stimuleren om verder te gaan. Door ze zoveel mogelijk opleidingen aan te bieden.

Martha komt uit Omishe in Owambaland.

Ze is een van de oprichtsters van Penduka. Toen ze op vierjarige leeftijd polio kreeg, ging ze bij haar tante wonen. Haar moeder had drie andere kinderen waarvoor ze moest zorgen.

Martha woont nu bij Penduka. Ze geeft onderwijs en helpt bij het maken van de producten van Penduka. Martha wil haar eigen huis bouwen in Katutura, de township van Windhoek. Als ze ouder is, wil ze terug naar Owambaland. Daar wil ze de achtergebleven ouderen helpen. Veel jongeren trekken naar Windhoek om werk te zoeken. Hun ouders en grootouders moeten zichzelf dan zien te redden. Met haar salaris onderhoudt Martha haar familie. Ze betaalt het eten en het schoolgeld van haar neefjes en nichtjes
